Blue Lagoon 1 is the original Vang Vieng lagoon stop: close enough for an easy half day, busy enough to feel highly commercial, and still useful because the swim sits directly below Tham Phu Kham, one of the area’s best-known caves.

01 · THE CLASSIC

Come early if you want to understand why the lagoon became famous

Blue Lagoon 1 lies roughly seven kilometres west of town and is the most established of the numbered lagoons. The turquoise water, overhanging jumping tree, food stalls and tour-group access make it easy to visit but also the busiest. Recent 2026 reports consistently describe heavy crowds at peak hours. If this is the lagoon you want to see, arrive early, swim before the large groups settle in and then decide whether the cave deserves the larger share of your visit.

The first lagoon is also the busiest lagoon.

02 · THAM PHU KHAM

The cave is the reason not to treat this as only a swimming pool

Tourism Laos describes Tham Phu Kham, or Golden Crab Cave, as a cavern that opens dramatically after a small entrance and contains a reclining Buddha image and wet limestone formations. The climb from the lagoon is steep enough to make proper shoes useful, and the interior quickly becomes dark beyond the entrance chamber. Bring a torch or headlamp and explore only the obvious visitor route. Climb before swimming if possible; wet shoes make limestone and ladders more awkward.

03 · JUMPING & SWIMMING

A famous jumping tree still needs a clear landing zone

The lagoon is known for swimming, swings and jumping platforms, but water depth and crowd position should be checked before every jump. Do not follow another swimmer blindly from a higher branch. If the water is busy, use the ladders and keep clear of the landing area below the tree. The site is social and energetic; travellers looking for a quiet swim will usually prefer Lagoon 2, 3 or 9.

04 · BUILD THE HALF DAY

Use the cave and lagoon as one stop, not two rushed attractions

Ride or take a tuk-tuk west, explore Tham Phu Kham while you are still dry, then use the lagoon as the recovery. Food and drinks are available on site, so there is little value in racing back to town for lunch. If the lagoon feels overcrowded, leave after the cave and continue farther west rather than forcing yourself to stay simply because Blue Lagoon 1 is the famous one.
