Phapoungkham Cave & Viewpoints
Phapoungkham is one of the clearest alternatives to Nam Xay: one trailhead, a small cave and two short summit branches — one with an airplane, the other with a white Pegasus — usually with far fewer visitors.

01 · TWO SUMMITS
The airplane and Pegasus are separate peaks
Recent 2026 field guides describe a shared trail that reaches a fork: one branch climbs to the airplane viewpoint, while the other reaches the Pegasus statue. The first summit takes roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes for many visitors, with another ten to fifteen minutes needed to connect toward the second. Both give wide views across western Vang Vieng and can be completed in a single visit without the sustained climb of Big Pha Ngern.
Do not stop at the first prop if you still have the legs for the second peak.
02 · THE CAVE
Keep the cave as a compact third chapter
A small cave sits near the trailhead and is easy to add before or after the viewpoints. Speleological mapping records a much larger cave system in the Pha Poung Kham area, but the Atlas should not turn that into an invitation to leave the managed visitor route. Bring a light, follow the local access and stop when the route is no longer obvious.
03 · TRAIL & LIGHT
Easy by Vang Vieng standards still includes ladders and steep ground
The hike is shorter than Nam Xay or Pha Ngern but includes steep sections and some ladder-assisted movement. Good footwear matters, especially after rain. The western position makes sunset attractive; carry a headlamp if you plan to stay late and descend before complete darkness.

04 · ANIMAL WELFARE
A chained animal is not part of the viewpoint experience
Recent visitor guides have reported a monkey kept on a chain near the attraction. Conditions can change, but the principle does not: do not pay for photos, handling or interactions that reward poor animal welfare. The value of Phapoungkham is the cave, trail and landscape. Leave wildlife and captive animals out of the souvenir photograph.
