Use the beach to break up a day of bridges and waterfalls

Xai Kong Nyai sits on Don Khon downstream from the Somphamit area and is commonly reached by bicycle or on foot as part of an island loop. Current guides describe a sandy riverbank with a few simple restaurants and long-tail boats. It works because it asks for less than the big sights: park the bicycle, eat, sit in the shade and watch the river before continuing toward the southern port or back to the bridge.

The beach is the pause, not another objective to finish quickly.

“Swimmable” does not mean current-free

Lonely Planet describes year-round swimming as possible but specifically warns about fast current away from shore. That distinction should stay visible. Enter only where the bank and current look calm, ask local restaurant or boat staff about conditions and remain close enough to stand or return easily. Do not swim out toward passing boats or deeper channels. Water level, submerged obstacles and current can change by season even when the sand looks familiar.

Agree on the route and safety gear before accepting a long-tail trip

Boatmen at the beach may offer short trips, sunset rides or other river excursions. Older guides note that these informal boats may not have fixed prices or the same equipment as an organised tour. Ask the price before boarding, confirm where the boat is going and request life jackets for everyone. A casual beach ride still deserves the same river-safety questions as any other Mekong boat journey.

Somphamit first, beach second is an easy rhythm

The beach is roughly a kilometre farther downriver from the Somphamit area according to long-running island guides, which makes the pairing natural. Visit the falls when you have energy for the paths and viewpoints, then use Xai Kong Nyai for food and recovery rather than trying to swim at the dangerous waterfall channels themselves. Keep enough daylight for the bicycle ride back across Don Khon and the bridge to Don Det.
